Mocha MIO (Make It Own) Kits now in stock @Pullipstyle

Just a quick update today, I keep forgetting to mention this here but Pullipstyle has received a restock of the mocha MIO or Make It Own kits. If you are unfamiliar with the MIO kits they are blank doll kits ideal for customization, not many tan Pullips get released so the mocha kits have been especially popular they sold out very quickly last time so I wanted to post a heads up here in case anyone has been waiting for a restock (it seems like I have been getting at least an email a week asking about the mochas and when they might be restocked). The kits are said to be the same color as Pullip Nahh-ato. The Mocha MIO kits are available for purchase here.

JPGroove Pullip Sample Sale

JPGroove is having another Sample Sale! For those of you unfamiliar with their previous Sample Sales the sale features dolls that were previously used as display models in stores or at events such as SDCC, because they were display dolls they do not come with their boxes or stands and they may even be missing an accessory or two. It is important to note that these dolls have been handled before so I would not buy with the expectation that will be an absolutely mint pristine doll, all of the dolls I have purchased from previous rounds of the Sample Sales have all been in reasonably nice condition but I buy with the expectation that maybe they might need a little work so if one shows up with a minor issue I won’t be disappointed but rather pleasantly surprised when they arrive in nice condition. The Sample Sales are a great chance to get a doll you have been wanting at a great discount, as of this writing there are over 40 dolls available as a part of the sample sale.  Here is a small sampling of the dolls up for offer at the moment…
samplesaleYou can check out the whole selection of Sample Sale dolls here.

It is not unheard of for JPGroove to add dolls periodically to the Sample Sale so even if you don’t see a doll you want now it may be worth it check back every now and again. I must try to resist the urge to look again as I already used up all of my Paypal balance to place an order for Isul Cedric, Isul Ciel from Kuroshitsuji, Dal DeLorean & Taeyang Butler.

Creator’s Label Dal Quince

The first post of the New Year here will be focusing on Pullip Lupinus’ counterpart and one of the few Dals to be released as a part of the Creator’s Label line Dal Quince. The Creator’s Label line for those of you who aren’t familiar with it is a series of dolls released by Groove that were designed by different customizers/doll artists from around the world to release dolls in that customizer’s style.  Pullips, Taeyangs, Isuls, Dals and even a single Byul has been released as a part of the Creator’s Label line but Dal has been featured as a part of the Creator’s Label series only rarely.  Besides Quince only two other Dals have been released as a part of the Creator’s Label so far Dal Hello Little Girl (designed by @NaiLabo) and Dal Heiwa (designed by Poison Girl). This is the first time a coordinated release of Pullip and Dal have been released as a part of the Creator’s Label line; I love that Groove has recently been releasing some coordinated pairs as a part of the Creator’s Label line, Pullips Cassie and Callie (both designed by Happy Dolly x Memento) as well as Pullip Naoko and Taeyang Koichi (both designed by Sherl’s Designs) somehow the dolls just look even cuter in pairs.

Dal Quince along with her counterpart Pullip Lupinus were designed by Silver Butterfly who previously co-designed Pullip Galene and Taeyang Natsume with Mitsubachi@BabyBee, Dal Quince and Pullip Lupinus represent their first solo effort as a part of the Creator’s Label line.  Groove stated on their blog that the face ups on Pullip Lupinus & Dal Quince were inspired by Bisque Dolls which are unglazed porcelain dolls that were popular in like the late 1800s, my experience with them is admittedly pretty limited (my mother has or had a few in her collection). They are kind of remarkable for having a matte finish to them and I think that Quince’s face up in particular really reminds me of that style particularly the blushing.
QuinceDal Quince and Pullip Lupinus were released in Japan in late November, due to the holidays and the inevitable shipping delays they cause they are just now making their way into the hands of the US dealers. I lacked patience for the US release so I imported the pair. Dal Quince and Pullip Lupinus have MSRPs of 20000 yen each.
Lupinus & QuinceI have already recently covered Pullip Lupinus here so now it’s time to do a post focusing on Dal Quince.

Creator’s Label Pullip Lupinus

The Creator’s Label series features dolls that showcase the talents of different doll customizers from around the world, Groove collaborates with them to release a doll based on their designs. The Creator’s Label series is great because it is not always realistically possible for everyone to get a one of a kind custom doll by their favorite artist so the Creator’s Label line gives everyone the opportunity to own a doll designed by their favorite customizer. In addition, the Creator’s Label line may introduce us to customizers we may not already be familiar with so we may just discover a new favorite customizer!

The latest additions to the Creator’s Label line are Pullip Lupinus and her companion release Dal Quince who were designed by Silver Butterfly. Silver Butterfly was previously featured as a part of the Creator’s Label line when they collaborated with Mitsubachi@BabyBee to design Pullip Galene & Taeyang Natsume back in 2012, Pullip Lupinus & Dal Quince are the first solo effort in the Creator’s Label by Silver Butterfly. The inspiration for Pullip Lupinus and Dal Quince as reported by Groove on their blog is Bisque Dolls which are porcelain dolls made of bisque that surged in popularity around the turn of the century (1800-1900s not 1900-2000s).
Lupinus & QuincePullip Lupinus & Dal Quince were both released last month in Japan and are set to be released here in the US in the next few days. Both of the dolls have a MSRP of 20000 yen. I got a bit impatient while waiting for the US release for the pair so I imported so I could get my dolls a bit earlier.
Pullip LupinusI previously introduced Pullip Lupinus here recently when I did a post focusing on the new eye mechanism feature which you can see here, she is the second Pullip released that has the new feature that allows her to have her eyes partially open versus just opened or closed. I thought it was time to make a post here focusing on all of the lovely Lupinus!

Closer Look at the new Eye Mechanism with Pullip Lupinus!

Ever since Groove announced a new eye mechanism function that allowed Pullip to have partially opened eyes in addition to fully open and closed eyes I have had a desire to open up one of the new dolls with it to see how it works. I recently covered the basics of the new style of eye mechanism including a few short videos using Pullip Cheshire Cat that can be seen here but I really wanted to see how it worked. Creator’s Label Pullip Lupinus is the second doll to be released that features a new eye mechanism function following her predecessor Pullip Cheshire Cat in Steampunk World.  I recently acquired Pullip Lupinus, her eye chips have been a bit a divisive issue in the Pullip community people either love them or hate them with no between. I wanted to see what she would look like with the more normal style of eye chips so it seemed like a good excuse to open her up!
LupinusAbove is a photo of Pullip Lupinus with her stock chips in. Let’s open her up to take a better look at that new and improved eye mechanism and change those chips…

Pullip Cheshire Cat in Steampunk World

Alice in Wonderland has been an incredibly popular theme for Pullip over the years that has been revisited time and again, over the last two years Groove has been releasing a new series of dolls based on Alice in Wonderland with a steampunk twist called Alice in Steampunk World. The recently released Pullip Cheshire Cat in Steampunk World is the latest and possibly final doll released in the Alice in Steampunk World series (the start of the Optical Alice series has been announced for early next year) other dolls released as a part of this series include Pullip Alice in Steampunk World, Dal Alice in Steampunk World, Isul White Rabbit in Steampunk World, Taeyang Dodo in Steampunk World and Pullip Mad Hatter in Steampunk World.

For as many Pullips have been released based off of Alice up until now there has never before been a full-sized Pullip based off of Cheshire Cat, there has been a Little Pullip + Cheshire Cat as well as a Byul Cheshire Cat that was a part of the Alice du Jardin series of dolls but that has been it which is kind of surprising considering the sheer amount of Alice dolls released over the years (for full list of absolutely all of the Alice dolls see here). As much as I like Byul Cheshire Cat du Jardin somehow she just never quite seemed to fit the character to me, I’ve been hoping and praying for years that Groove would finally release a proper Pullip Cheshire Cat…finally that day has come!
Cheshire CatPullip Cheshire Cat in Steampunk World was released in October in Japan, late November/early December here in the US. She has a MSRP of 18000 yen. I received my Pullip Cheshire Cat from Pullipstyle a little bit over a week ago and I absolutely could not be happier with her, she was well worth the years of waiting for the perfect Cheshire Cat Pullip. In even more exciting news, Pullip Cheshire Cat was the doll to feature the debut of a new eye mechanism function that allows Pullip to have her eyes partially open instead of just fully open or fully closed which I have already done a little write up of here that you can check out to learn more.

Pullip Cheshire Cat debut of New Style Eye Mechanism!

Pullip Cheshire Cat in Steampunk World features the debut a new style of eye mechanism, basically instead of being able to just fully open or close her eyes she is also able to have her eyes just partially closed as well. Pullip Cheshire Cat will be getting a few review here as well very soon but I wanted to make a post devoted to the new style of mechanism as I know I can’t be the only one who was curious how it works.  I really love and adore Pullip Cheshire Cat as is so I can’t bring myself to take her apart to make a thorough investigation into her eye mechanism but Pullip Lupinus is coming and I feel as though she would benefit from some new eyechips…and if I have to open her up anyway well then I can do some comparison pictures of the newer style mechanism versus the normal mechanism.

While I normally am not one to post videos, the new eye mechanism is easier to understand in motion. I decided to shoot a short video of the new eye mechanism in action, I ended up shooting two alternate views on my phone so I could share how it looks from the front and the back just in case anyone was curious how it worked.

Front view

Back/side view

I honestly do not expect videos to become a regular part of this website but sometimes things are just easier to explain or understand in video than in photos (though somewhat hilariously tumblr judged one of the two videos I posted above as sexually explicit). More traditional photos as well as comparisons etc behind the cut!

4 Most Exciting Pullip Related Things of 2016

As 2016 draws to close and it looks increasingly unlikely that any additional dolls will be announced for a 2016 release by Groove, I wanted to take a moment to look back at some of the most exciting or noteworthy things to be released by Groove this year!

Something of note before we get started, I know going into this that not everyone is going to agree with every entry on this list and that at least one entry on this list is controversial but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t noteworthy.

This list is no particular order…

1). Pullipstyle Exclusive Pullip Amelia- Can I be a bit cheeky and start with Amelia? After a clever marketing campaign on their facebook page Pullipstyle finally revealed a new exclusive Pullip, Amelia! Amelia is Pullipstyle’s second exclusive, back in 2012 they released an exclusive Pullip Froggy who was based on the classic little Pullip release of the same name. Pullip Amelia was notable not only for being a Pullipstyle exclusive but because for the first time ever a Pullip was designed by two US Pullip collectors Requiemart and myself.

Amelia was designed with the older classic Pullip releases in mind, we wanted her to have a strong personality like the older releases. I don’t think anyone ever imagined she would be quite so popular but we are elated that she is so well received by the community, I was especially excited to see owner photos of her from Pullip collectors that I haven’t seen buy a new Pullip in years. It was great seeing so much excitement for a Pullip release, she even set some new records for Pullipstyle she had the highest number of preorders of any doll released to date and is their best selling doll release of 2016. As a note, if you haven’t already purchased Amelia she is still available as of this writing via Pullipstyle here she is limited to 400 so if you haven’t bought her already I wouldn’t put it off for too much longer!

2). New Eye Mechanism Function/Pullip Cheshire Cat- Groove debuted a new eye mechanism with Pullip Cheshire Cat in Steampunk World starting with Cheshire Cat’s release all subsequent Pullip releases (with the exception of Pullip Taffy) will be able to have their eyelids in three different positions open, partially opened and closed. I actually really like the new partially closed option, it subtly changes Pullip’s expression and gives her a bit of a knowing look similar to the Type 1/Type 2 Pullips.
cheshirecatmosEven without the new eye mechanism feature being included, Pullip Cheshire Cat in Steampunk World is kind of notable for being the first full sized Pullip Cheshire Cat release even though we have had upteenth different Alice Pullip released over the years, also she is just straight up a gorgeous Pullip release and is sure to be one of this year’s most popular releases alongside Amelia.

3). Mocha MIO Kits– The Pullip community has been hoping that more diverse skin tone options such as tan would be released since the Pullip MIO or Make It Own kits were announced. Finally this spring the Pullip community’s prayers were answered, MIO kits were released in a lovely dark tan or “Mocha” skin tone that was roughly equivalent to former Pullip release Pullip Nahh-ato.
Needless to say, the Mocha MIO kits didn’t last very long before selling out as the community eagerly snapped them up! I’ve been enjoying seeing all the lovely tan skinned customs, I hope that Groove releases more Mocha MIO kits in the future as well as considering more diverse skin tones for MIO kits in the future (dare I hope for a Mocha Dal kit??).

4). Veritas Special Version- I will conclude this list with the most controversial Pullip release of the year, Premium Pullip Veritas Special Version. I think it was the entire Pullip community was in universal agreement that the new version of Veritas was a gorgeous doll. Unfortunately for Pullip fans everywhere, she was exclusive to Ars Gratia Artis, limited to only 50 dolls and her price was extraordinarily high. She was initially available at the discounted price point of $405 but that was only for a limited time only her price eventually rose to $450 which gave her the distinction of being the most expensive Pullip released to date. I was honestly kind of shocked that she did manage to sell out at that price though I have still yet to see any owner photos (no I did not order her).

Tan Pullip dolls are still something rarely released so to make such a gorgeous tan doll and have her be so limited with her price point set so high seemed like a cruel joke as she become unattainable for the vast majority of Pullip fans. I don’t really fault Groove for Veritas, nothing about her from a production standpoint looks like she would cost that much more to produce than the Premium Pullip Veritas Crimson Version I feel like AGA didn’t really take into consideration fans of Pullip when they decided to set her price point so high. Here’s to hoping Groove is able to widely release a mocha Pullip soon so more fans of Pullip have a chance to enjoy a gorgeous tan Pullip.

I’m excited to see what Groove will do will do next year, the few releases from 2017 we have seen so far seem promising!

Side Project

This site’s content has becoming overwhelmingly doll-centric, Pullip in particular it has gotten to the point where it feels really foreign for me to post anything else besides dolls here. I miss having an outlet for my non-doll collecting vices so I have decided to revitalize Kleintoys.wordpress.com so I can keep this site purely Pullip (and other dolls) and still have somewhere to write about other things I collect like anime figures, comics, Funko Pops etc. I’ve already started the process of migrating some of my older non-doll related posts over there and posted about a few recent DC Comics/Funko acquisitions. I’m not abandoning this site, I’m just starting a new side project so I can still write about other things when/if I have the desire to do so.
