I was in the Boston area yesterday for something (I’ll make a post about that later) so I had some time to kill so I figured I would take the T down to the Cambridge area and check out Tokyo Kid store and a couple of smaller comic book shops in the area. I have been to Tokyo Kid a handful of times before, it had been almost a year since I had been in their store proper though.
Honestly I was kind of disappointed with their selection, I am not sure if Anime Boston cleaned them out and they have not fully recouped yet but I seem to remember them having a lot better of a selection on my previous visits. There were a few things that caught my eye and kind of tempted me but for how relatively long I have been out of the game, I honestly expected a lot more temptations to be at the store. Maybe my expectations were too high but at the same time, I didn’t feel the normal almost wonder-lust I get when I leave Animadness or that I felt on my previous trips there.

Some nice things in this case, I actually really liked the Choun figure ultimately decided against getting her.
I feel like their prices were relatively high, maybe I am too far removed from the anime figure scene but $50 each for Sega Prize figures like He is My Master bed Izumi and Anna figures, seems high especially when the original MSRP for those was only 1500 yen. I consider myself to be pretty realistic about my price expectations, I know the yen conversion rate sucks at the moment but I think $30-$35 would have been a more realistic/reasonable price for them. Other prices? most nendoroids were in the $60 range, there were a few older ones for $45 though. Most of the 1/8 figures were either $100 or $150. They had both of the newer Magical Lyrical Girl Nanoha figures by Alter, I was really considering getting Fate but decided against her she was $200 which is pretty pricey, normally I would have bit the bullet and bought her but because of her size transportation played a decisive role in deciding against her. I knew I wouldn’t being getting back to my car for hours as I would be riding the T, I was going to a Red Sox game and I honestly wasn’t sure if she would even be allowed in the park because of her size. The weather also played a role while it wasn’t raining at the time, the forecast had called for rain and it was pouring by the time I did actually get back to my car. All things considered I am glad I didn’t bite the bullet and buy her because the box would have been ruined by the time I got back to my car ^^;
I ended up getting only a few small things from the shop. I got the Luka nendoroid I had been wanting for a while ($60!), a petit nendoroid from Death Note (the nurse outfit was too cute) and a couple of issues of Newtype.
I asked a couple of basic questions to whoever was working there yesterday and they pretty rude in their responses, I’ve had really good experiences there in the past but damn I just got the impression they just didn’t care about my business at all yesterday.I had still been waffling on a few things then but I decided to just go small at that point and just get a few things, which of course means I ended up buying a bunch of things online once I did get home. Next time I get the urge to shop in an actual anime store I am just going to go back to Animadness, their prices are better there anyway plus the owners are nice (and of course they do sell pullip).
